At the end of this podcast I show you how I am cutting apart my Ice Shanty sweater and making it longer. I would not have had the courage to attempt this if not for Carol Feller’s Craftsy class, Sweater Surgery. I also used theCraftsy class, Seaming Handknits which was a great help sewing this crazy sweater together!

Check the Ravelry group for important announcements about the Adopt a Senior program!

Episode 20 What Does the Rooster Say?

Hello all! Welcome to the Hudson Valley Knits Podcast.

Friendly reminder that my Senior Love Along continues on this year.  I am collecting cotton wash clothes to hand out to seniors living in homes during the holiday season. Please hold on to your washcloths until later in the year. There is an FO thread where you can post a picture of each of your washcloths. Each one you make is a chance to win a prize! I will be announcing prizes that I will provide very shortly and unashamedly ask for any prize donations. They would be very welcome and much appreciated!

Toatie Hottie by Kate Davies Designs. Love this cute little cozy. I bought the kit from Kate’s shop in the Madder and Cream colors. So close!!!

Hiroshima Peace Socks by Donna Druchunus. Double knit using Plucky Feet in the colors

Spinning – Spun up the batts I purchased at the Webs tent sale. One bat was practice for my long draw. Sadly too yucky to use for anything but I plied it anyway. I ended up using a hybrid long draw/short draw and I like the way it came out. I will 2 ply this.

Guardian of Air Shawl almost done with a sample and writing up the pattern. Anyone interested in test knitting?

The Teacher Cowl – Really quick and easy cowl. Great for using up any art yarn you may have in your stash. I will also be writing up this pattern.

Episode 19 Webs’ Tent Sale!

Hello all! Welcome to the Hudson Valley Knits Podcast. Went on an exciting road trip to Webs‘ Tent Sale and had a great time. I have some special “stash” to share with you all! This is a long one so I am adding some fun pictures to this post rather than having them at the end of the show. (Truth is I forgot to add the pictures and had already exported the movie so you’ll have the music and a blank screen).

In My Knitting World

Sometimes I feel like I am three different people living in three different worlds.

There is Amy the corporate woman. Blaa… Some people thrive at this type of life and love it. Me not so much. I never wanted it. I just had no choice. I was a single Mom with 2 kids to support. I do the absolute best I can, work with amazing people and am grateful to work for a great company that gives me good salary and benefits, but for me it is empty time. It does nothing for my soul.

Then there is Amy the Tarot Reader. Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of being a fortune teller and reading cards for people. Why? because I wanted to know what I couldn’t see. I also wanted to give people answers that they couldn’t find. I also loved the mystery of it all. I have been reading and studying the cards for many years now and this is where I feel myself. I love it and will never tire of it. Unfortunately it’s hard to make a living off it. especially in my neck of the woods where the cost of living is so high.

And then there is Amy the Knitter. I’ve been knitting and creating things since I was a child. Grandma taught me to knit and crochet and I’ve always loved it. I love making things and giving them to people I love. It’s my love in a physical form. Often times I dream of becoming a knitting designer but Amy the Corporate Woman keeps getting in the way by hogging all my time.

My goal for 2013 is to honor Amy the Tarot Reader and Amy the Knitter by giving them more time. I’m not sure how I am going to swing this but I am sure going to try! Do you hear that Universe? I’m ready to make that change!

Meanwhile in my knitting world here are some of the gifts I made in 2012 to give to people I love!

I designed this shawl specially for my sister Lisa. She is one of the most beautiful people I know and I love her so deeply. It makes me so happy to see her wrapped up in this.

I also snuck in a pair of Porifera Socks designed by Miriam Felton with the leftover yarn

My sister Kim got this Gyllis Shawl in a Spirit Trail Fiberworks yarn of the most beautiful colorway. It was perfect for Kimmy.

that was for her birthday. I also knit her this Color Affection shawl for Christmas

My husband still hasn’t gotten his Aran Sweater but he did get a pair of custom socks designed by moi.

The kids got some things too. Joe got a nice slouchy hat. He wears it A LOT. I have even caught him sleeping with it on!

Rachael got a nice warm cosy pair of Snowflake Socks to wear. These are a Drops design and I used their yarn as well. They knit up fast!

My Mother in Law also got a special gift this year. I have to get a picture of her wearing this. I swear her eyes almost match the green in the shawl! It is so beautiful on her with her red hair! It is the Carson Shawl designed by Romi Hill. Love it!

Next year my number one goal is to get Marc’s sweater done. I also want to publish some of my own designs.

I have lots of stuff I want to blog about in future posts. I have a lot to say about many of the Craftsy classes. I’ll let you know how Vogue Knitting Live goes this weekend! I will definitely keep you up to date on my designing aspirations. I so wish I had more time for that!! Sigh….

What to Make Next? Craftsy to the Rescue!

I have to share this with you because I think it is rather funny. I have been spending a lot of time using the Craftsy platform. I love it! I think I have signed up for almost every knitting class. I don’t need them all but every one of them has taught me something. Thing is it is driving my husband mad. You know those rifts of music at the beginning of each lesson? Well he’s got them all down pat. Knows exactly what class I am listening to just from the music. Right now I am designing a pair of socks for him using Knit Picks Imagination Yarn in the colorway Seven Dwarves.

With the help of Donna Druchunas’ Original Toe Up Sock Class of course! Marc has unusually thick feet and Donna’s class has been extremely helpful in planning a sock that will fit Marc. Here you can see me measuring his foot circumference.  11 1/4 ” !

Here are some FO that came out wonderful.

This is the Porifera socks I knit for my sister. They came out great!

I also finished the Pogona Shawl by Stephen West using Malabrigo Arroyo in the color Archangel

I should be working on Marc’s sweater but honestly I am so afraid of messing it up I have procrastinated.  I think I may need to “consult” with Stefanie Japel or Carol Feller over at Craftsy. I’m sure they will be able to help 🙂

Inspiration Tsunami

I have so many things going on and there is so much to write about but not quite time. I will say that I am really excited about publishing some of my designs and am taking the time to make sure the patterns are well written. I have my collared cowl out being test knitted and will be sending the ptn off to a tech editor before publishing. I also have my Against the Current Shawl to submit and my Robins’ Nest cowl which will be a free pattern. I also will write out a pattern for my Guardian of Air shawl.

If you don’t already know, my patterns are inspired by Joanna Powell Colbert’s Gaian Tarot Deck. I am a Tarot reader as well as a knitter and use Joanna’s deck often for readings. I started thinking of knitted items I would make the people in her deck and started making them but not writing up the patterns.

I don’t currently have any published patterns and this is all new to me. I will put the patterns up on Craftsy and Ravelry and maybe look into other places like Patternfish. I need to learn how to set up a store here on my website as well.

Here are some pictures of my patterns thus far.
